The Tutor
John Dowling has been the sole
banjo teacher at the Brindley workshops since they began several
years ago. As a fulltime musician/teacher, he’s provided first
class tuition, with an ability to assist every level of musicianship.
He was originally trained in classical violin from the age of 5,
however his foremost musical devotion has been to the banjo. Having
been exposed to many types of music, it’s apparent in his playing
that he has pushed the boundaries of the 5-string banjo, and has
successfully incorporated it into a wide variety of musical genres.
In the year 2000, he won 1st place in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award
with his banjo/piano duo, the Black Cat Theory. He later went on to
win 1st place in the USA National Bluegrass Banjo Championships held
in Kansas in 2002, making him the first European to have ever won the
award.
John currently plays in 5 bands, ranging from Irish/Rockabilly to Bluegrass,
whilst successfully performing as a solo artist. He teaches privately,
but also holds various workshops at festivals up and down the country.
